Laws, codes, regulations, and related material, 1837-1940 [state publication].

This series contains laws, codes, regulations, and related material which affect the military and naval forces of the state. Included are constitutional provisions, both federal and state, and statutes governing enrollments, organization, composition, elections and appointments, military sub-divisions, volunteer corps, trainings, drills, reviews, duties and powers, penalties, fines, and forfeitures, courts-martial, military leave, uniforms, equipment and arms, etc. The form of oath against duelling, rules and regulations of war, Congressional acts relating to state militia, the uniform of the U.S. Army, regulations in camp, and forms for returns of strength and condition of regiments and brigades, are also present in early Codes. General Orders and rosters of officers appear occasionally. The regulations (Number 4, 1940) concern the Alabama State Guard, a temporary force organized during emergencies. Only the Governor could authorize the organization of the Guard, but the Adjutant General would prepare and have available plans and recommendations. Included also is an organization chart. Related material consists of "notes" for state legislators on the proposed military law, House Bill 784, from the Department. The bill recommended a revision of state military laws. Duties of the Adjutant General include "to cause military laws to be printed and bound." This series also gives constitutional and statutory authority to the powers, duties, and functions of the Department.
